TO - 02/12 - is a 1989’s outfit ridiculous…?

Surfing on Fashion Era I came across Laver’s Law, the timeline of style, that probably you already know, but I think it’s interesting to enquiry.

James Laver was an insightful British art and fashion historian who died in 1975. And Laver’s Law describes how an outfit will be viewed as seen through time.

Indecent - 10 years before its time
Shameless - 5 years before
Daring - 1 year before
Smart!
Dowdy - 1 year after its time
Hideous - 10 years after
Ridiculous - 20 years after
Amusing - 30 years after
Quaint - 50 years after
Charming - 70 years after
Romantic - 100 years after
Beautiful - 150 years after its time

As we have seen in trends the return of the sixties, seventies and eighties, how does it fit in this timeline???
As time goes by and fashion evolves and we see trends disappear faster, is this law still acceptable??
Insights are welcome…

After a long night of rain we had a great day of sun, to warm our hearts.

Don’t you think I’m becoming braver, wearing my fedora two times this week?

black ankle boots - local store
blue skinny pants - Vero Moda
hot pink turtleneck - Zara
purple covered with black lace belt - Tally Weijl
black blazer (from a suit) - Ana Sousa
dark purple fury scarf - gift
black fedora hat - Zara
necklace - mainland store
bracelet - gift from Hubby (Tie Rack)
cocktail ring - gift from Hubby
lipstick - Esté Lauder
perfume - Noa from Cacharel

  3. Ridiculous - 20 years after

This means that the 90's trend is about to dissapear for at least 10 years!?

  6. So funny.
    I love the laws.
I never thought I would see the day when Tie-Dye jeans would come into play. It always reminded me of NJ metal mullet bands but sure enough!
I love your blue jeans...so vibrant.

  11. I find it hard sometimes to relate to laws because somehow or another, one can find exceptions.

  12. Hey...
You look so cool with that skinny pants. and that ankle boot.

I've never wore ankle boot. I'm not too confident to wear it. BUt, I think I'm gonna wear it sumtimes. :)

  13. I don't want to upset you, but I think that those trousers produce a strange shape, at least from some points of view. Maybe because of the light colour + postural creases.

Back to Laver's law, I suppose the frequence rises with time... or that current designers like to mix the last 40 years too much!

  16. I adore that list of laws. Both droll and true! Well, to some extent. I think kitsch is overlooked, and that dressing from a recently-passed era can be cool and kitschy if done carefully.

  25. Hey Seeker!!!! my dear friend! :) You are looking lovely as ever! I love the Fedora, it's really great! And I love the hot pink :) very nice on you! I believe those laws might be a bit outdated, lol. Everything seems to come back about every 20 or 30 years, it might be a bit updated, but it's still the same. Just like leggings have made a comeback this year, except I won't be wearing them this year! lol. (to fat) lol. YOu take care my sweet friend, luvyas!

  26. No, I believe in the 20 year rule, that things come back into fashion. You prove it as I wore skirts that length, cherry lane colors etc oh, the ones you wear every day - at least 20 years ago.

It amuses me to think that when I was 16, going out with ImeldaMike and company and feeling like we were the fashion divas - all our looks were very mod inspired (20 years before)

But what came before that? the second world war. Fashion is now like a rotating dial that always comes back, at least until we give up and start wearing those stretchy jumpsuits in the Science Fiction movies (imagine the visible panty line)

    xx
