TO – 03/17 – when I grow up… and my new top…

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"

You know the question. You're asked it from an early age. For most of us, the answer changed as we grew up and got older. At different times in my childhood, I wanted to be a ballet ballerina, a science investigator, an architect, an inventor or an artist. Those are the ones I remember, anyway.

As a child, our answer to that question is stimulated by our likes and what makes us happy. But when we leave high school, the question takes on a serious tone, doesn't it? If going to college, you're supposed to pick a major - what you want to do for the rest of your life.
Instead, most of the times, our careers or college majors are determined by other factors: money, career growth potential, demand, what our father/family did, etc.

Do you remember what you wanted to be when you were a child? The answer(s) could provide insight into your soul's passions.

Funny that we were asked what we wanted to BE when we grew up when it would have been more correct to ask what we wanted to DO when we grew up. WHAT you want to BE or WHO you want to BE is a whole different question...

I like the approach Deepak Chopra refers to in his book, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, in the chapter on Dharma:
"Everyone has a purpose in life... a unique gift or special talent to give to others. You have a talent that is unique in its expression, so unique that there's no one else alive on this planet that has that talent, or that expression of that talent."

  8. Beautiful top, friend. The purple looks lovely on you, and in the place you were photographed its looks especially good. I also like the neck detail--if it's the brooch from your hubby or part of the top? Very nice, and the touch of white around your face.

I'm so in tune with your thinking here about what we wanted to be or do when we grew up. You know, I had such freewheeling parents that I wasn't really asked that too much. I did want to be a fashion designer at some point and then picked an academic path (history) because I thought my father would approve more!

Somewhere recently I read that middle age is our chance to go back to who we were in our childhoods and recapture who/what we wanted to be. I live for that thought!

Thank you Seeker. I'm so glad to have your views on my blog and I love visiting yours.

  17. Love the sassy ruffle on your sweater!

When I was little, I wanted to be a bellydancer. Not ballet, belly. And I am totally terrified of dancing now, but I think my instinct was this: I want to feel happy and free in my own skin. Still working on that.

  18. Love your purple top and those shoes are fabulous! Whenever anybody asked me what I wanted to be when I was younger, I always used to reply 'Happy!' Career wise, I have always wanted to write and teach, even when I was a toddler at nursery, the idea of being a teacher made me smile.

  20. Hello!
Oh, I hate this question... It makes me think of future and change, both of which frightens me.
Ballet ballerina, scientist, actress... Yes, these are my dream jobs.
Eeek. Serious. I hate it. Fortunately I have a friend who is just like me: She likes both science and languages, and we know that we want to go to University, but we don't know yet what we want to study.
I really liked your outfit today! I like the purple top! It's very new, isn't it?
    Kisses and a Hug,

And I love the quote you ended your post with.. kind of reinforces the belief that no matter how similar we all get, we are still unique individuals.. which I sometimes forget. :-)

    ps

  28. Hi darling,

I can remember looking up at my mom when I was a small child, and watch her make me flour tortillas, and other things.

I use to tell her, Mom some day when I grow up I am going to become a chemist and create a face lotion to always keep you looking beautiful like you are right now.....

    xooxoxoxo

  30. I love the new profile !!!
What a wonderful post, I think with each decade we definitely learn more about who we are and what we can do more confidently. But yes when I was little, there were a million things I wanted to be. I think by dabbling in all your interests, finally something just sticks well.

    You look fantastic :)

  31. What a cute outfit! I guess I am not very modern, because what I really wanted to be was a mother. Thats all. I have always been interested in psychology and design, but nurturing is what I do best.

  39. well nobody told me I could write. And boy did I do a lot of writing in school. No, I wanted to be an actor.

The closest I got to my true destiny was selling raffle tickets to help send a school friend to London for am Athletics competition. That and me and ImeldaMike held a slave auction - we even wore Togas.

So here I am writing and fundraising 22 years later.

You know I love it when you wear purple, It is for the Suffragettes you know?
