TO – 03/17 – when I grow up… and my new top…

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"

You know the question. You're asked it from an early age. For most of us, the answer changed as we grew up and got older. At different times in my childhood, I wanted to be a ballet ballerina, a science investigator, an architect, an inventor or an artist. Those are the ones I remember, anyway.

As a child, our answer to that question is stimulated by our likes and what makes us happy. But when we leave high school, the question takes on a serious tone, doesn't it? If going to college, you're supposed to pick a major - what you want to do for the rest of your life.
Instead, most of the times, our careers or college majors are determined by other factors: money, career growth potential, demand, what our father/family did, etc.

Do you remember what you wanted to be when you were a child? The answer(s) could provide insight into your soul's passions.

Funny that we were asked what we wanted to BE when we grew up when it would have been more correct to ask what we wanted to DO when we grew up. WHAT you want to BE or WHO you want to BE is a whole different question...

I like the approach Deepak Chopra refers to in his book, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, in the chapter on Dharma:
"Everyone has a purpose in life... a unique gift or special talent to give to others. You have a talent that is unique in its expression, so unique that there's no one else alive on this planet that has that talent, or that expression of that talent."

  7. you are pretty in purple! and i love how the purple looks against that luscious green grass!

  8. Beautiful top, friend. The purple looks lovely on you, and in the place you were photographed its looks especially good. I also like the neck detail--if it's the brooch from your hubby or part of the top? Very nice, and the touch of white around your face.

I'm so in tune with your thinking here about what we wanted to be or do when we grew up. You know, I had such freewheeling parents that I wasn't really asked that too much. I did want to be a fashion designer at some point and then picked an academic path (history) because I thought my father would approve more!

Somewhere recently I read that middle age is our chance to go back to who we were in our childhoods and recapture who/what we wanted to be. I live for that thought!

Thank you Seeker. I'm so glad to have your views on my blog and I love visiting yours.

  9. p.s. about that belt issue? I'm getting advice, and trying different things. Thanks!

it also changed and in october i'm going to start studying ;)

btw, i love purple on you!!!

  17. Love the sassy ruffle on your sweater!

When I was little, I wanted to be a bellydancer. Not ballet, belly. And I am totally terrified of dancing now, but I think my instinct was this: I want to feel happy and free in my own skin. Still working on that.

  18. Love your purple top and those shoes are fabulous! Whenever anybody asked me what I wanted to be when I was younger, I always used to reply 'Happy!' Career wise, I have always wanted to write and teach, even when I was a toddler at nursery, the idea of being a teacher made me smile.

  19. Ya has cambiado el perfil, me alegro, esta muy bonito, ahora tengo que irme.

  20. Hello!
Oh, I hate this question... It makes me think of future and change, both of which frightens me.
Ballet ballerina, scientist, actress... Yes, these are my dream jobs.
Eeek. Serious. I hate it. Fortunately I have a friend who is just like me: She likes both science and languages, and we know that we want to go to University, but we don't know yet what we want to study.
I really liked your outfit today! I like the purple top! It's very new, isn't it?
    Kisses and a Hug,

  21. great outfit.
i have been thinking about this a lot lately. what do i want to do? i am studying for the GRE's right now (standadized test for grad school) so that i can take the next step towards figuring it out.

  23. I love your writing, it is so true!
You asked me about Nadine, she is fine. She deleted her blog because of personal reasons I know, but I do not want to retell. I hope you understand! But you can watch her still at flickr!

  24. awww that top is so flirty and kute!

  25. Really love the purple-ish and sunset feel of this! :)

  26. Sweetie...
Well, when I was a baby i wanted to be a doctor. OMG, now if I see blood I faint XD!!!
When I was in high school I wanted to be a journalist and this is a passion that I still ... Even now I dream to become a good journalist. But due to certain events I haven't been able to change the city and I haven't been able to make a journalist. I'm studying to become a teacher ... and I like so much this work because work with children is wonderful!

Well... about your outfit... I love so much your purple top. I love purple <3 On you is so brillant color... Wonderful darling!

    How are you?
    I love you

  27. I love that you're wearing a bright shade of purple.. Purple always makes me feel happy for some reason. :-)

And I love the quote you ended your post with.. kind of reinforces the belief that no matter how similar we all get, we are still unique individuals.. which I sometimes forget. :-)

I wanted to be an archaelogist when I was younger.. actually, I still want to be one. :-)

  28. Hi darling,

I can remember looking up at my mom when I was a small child, and watch her make me flour tortillas, and other things.

I use to tell her, Mom some day when I grow up I am going to become a chemist and create a face lotion to always keep you looking beautiful like you are right now.....

  29. I love your new profile picture - so pretty and graceful <3

I so agree with your words, it's more important to be someone, rather than something :)

Love you in the purple, very sassy! xxx

  30. I love the new profile !!!
What a wonderful post, I think with each decade we definitely learn more about who we are and what we can do more confidently. But yes when I was little, there were a million things I wanted to be. I think by dabbling in all your interests, finally something just sticks well.

    You look fantastic :)

  31. What a cute outfit! I guess I am not very modern, because what I really wanted to be was a mother. Thats all. I have always been interested in psychology and design, but nurturing is what I do best.

  32. I don't know what I wanted to become when I was child, it changed every week :p. First teacher, then nurse, then doctor,...

you look so good in purple

  33. I love the sequence of pictures you take. It always pares everything down to exactly what matters; the outfit!

And I do like this one. Purple is fast becoming one of my fave standout colours....so much so, I picked a purple suede pair of heels as a gift from the boy :)

  34. Purple is such a pretty color.

I don't think I ever want to grow up :-)))

  35. U are so beautiful! Great purple top. U are a trendy lady! :D

    xoxo: Janet

  36. I love your sweater!
When i was young i wanted to be a teatcher or an arkeolog.

    muah x

  38. Hi dear, I hope you are doing well. Just, as a brief note, these pictures are very cute :)

  39. well nobody told me I could write. And boy did I do a lot of writing in school. No, I wanted to be an actor.

The closest I got to my true destiny was selling raffle tickets to help send a school friend to London for am Athletics competition. That and me and ImeldaMike held a slave auction - we even wore Togas.

So here I am writing and fundraising 22 years later.

You know I love it when you wear purple, It is for the Suffragettes you know?

  40. I love your bag and shoes :)

  41. I wanted to be a teacher, lawyer, historian ad ended up studing literature. And I love it. I'm no longer comfortable making plans, I'm sure I'll find my way :)

Your top is sooooo cool. By the way, what a lovely park.

Thank you for visiting my humble blog! I read all your comments (even though I don't reply often) with great care. So keep them coming! Love to everyone :)
