fall/winter 2011/12 trends..... jewel tones

The palette has moved on from summer's acid brights and paintbox pops of colour into the sumptuous realm of jewel tones for autumn/winter 2011-12.

With names like amethyst, sapphire, emerald, ruby, garnet and citrine - these hues have the power to make you feel rich and sophisticated.
While there was plenty of black to be seen on the catwalks, it was peppered with striking colours that dazzled in their desirability, just like real-life gems. For maximum impact, wear one colour from head-to-toe, shades of jade and rich ruby red stand out best.
If that's too much, let your accessories do the sparkling, with clutch bags or ladylike heels in precious tones.

fall/winter 2011/12 trends..... one of the Boys

On the autumn/winter 2011-12 runways, audiences were primed for a gender shake-up.

This season, all the coolest girls will be borrowing from the boys, with pinstripes, felt suiting, white shirts and trousers providing a fresh riff on tailoring, while silk ties, cummerbunds and overcoats pack a manly punch. Feminine curves were literally enveloped under this masculine aesthetic, as the super-sized, slouchy cuts and jackets and overcoats. For a feminine twist, add a plunging silk shirt or sparkly trousers and heels.

fall/winter 2011/12 trends..... print and pattern

For braver dressers, this season is a master class in pattern, decorative, spots, floral or motif - the choice is yours.

Richly-coloured blooms flowered on dresses and coats, while motifs made an impact when mixed with a monochrome palette.
"Grown-up and elegantly realised, spots are the key decoration to play with now," says Vogue's Emma Elwick-Bates. "Sheer circles, sophisticated paillettes and racy cut-outs provide evening magic." They are also the best place for print novices to begin experimenting.

fall/winter 2011/12 trends..... tunics with trousers

Tunics worn with trousers is autumn/winter 2011-12's new easy uniform.

Teaming tunics with trousers in an effortlessly chic combination is a thinking woman's trend, for women who want a look that says sophisticated but not slave to the trends. A relaxed, loose, silhouette covers a multiple of sins, while panels in block colours add interest and depth. A prevalence of a monochrome palette in the trend points to a sobriety that won't tolerate fashion's mercurial fluctuations but this is a look that is unexpectedly sexy.
