guest post - How To Be a Goodwill Fashionista

As I have told you before, here in my city we don’t have Goodwill or Thrifty stores.
So I’m so pleased to have Alexis Bonari, a freelance writer and researcher for CollegeScholarships.org as a guest blogger here at Searching the Inner Me….

Read below as she demystifies and gives some tips about thrift store shopping.

The Seeker

The recent economy has made many people cut back on spending in all areas, including fashion. Goodwill used to be only for people who didn’t care how they looked, but not anymore; it has become a resource for thrifty fashionistas and trendy hipsters.
Within a couple weeks of each other, I found my favorite pair of jeans (straight-leg, Gap brand) for $3.89 and a couple of J. Crew tops that I frequently wear to work for under $4 each. My favorite story, however, comes from a girlfriend of mine, who found a small, Coach bag for $10! I’ve also seen several tops and pants from Ann Taylor Loft but am holding out for my a few in my size.

If you’re willing to put in a little time and a lot of patience, thrift store shopping is a great way to cut your fashion spending without having to sacrifice the brand names. Here are a few things to help weed out the unused, unwanted items you’re likely to find.

1. Know Your Area
If you live in a small town, you may only have a single store, but bigger cities usually have multiple locations, and a fifteen-minute drive can be the difference between finding Walmart jeans and 7 For All Mankind. Find the stores in the nicer neighborhoods around town to find better brand names for the same price.

2. Decide What You’re Comfortable With
I wear jeans until they actually rip apart, so second-hand works great for me; however, I don’t like used hats, shoes or lingerie, so decide which used items are acceptable to you and stay away from the rest; cheap items are still wasted money if you don’t use them. This will also save you time while sifting through all the items.

3. Know Your Layout
Clothes are divided into adults and children and further by gender. There are also super cheap bins in the back. Individual pieces are divided by color, not style or size, so you’ll have to do some digging to find what appeals to you and what will actually fit. What you save in money, you’ll pay for with time and patience.

4. Try Things On
Just because you’re not sopping in a department stores doesn’t mean you can’t try items on. Goodwill locations usually have two or three small dressing rooms. Make sure things fit and flatter your figure. Again, unused cheap items are still wasted money.

5. Inspect. Inspect. Inspect.
You can’t return items if you get home and they have holes or stains, so go over them several times to make sure they are acceptable for everyday wear.

6. Accessorize
Use the money you’re saving on clothing at Goodwill to invest in great accessory pieces to accent your new finds and give them some variety.

bubble gum….

My city is dressing its best clothes to live the biggest festivities of the year, the Sanjoaninas, which are the Saint John’s Festival, starting Friday night, including St. John’s Day (June 24) and during all week, meaning diversion, parades, people, lights, food, drinks, music…

So it seems it makes us feel in a better mood. Besides today was the summer solstice, meaning that here in the Northern Hemisphere we are officially in summer. Maybe for that reason after some days of terrible weather the sun exhibited itself. Let’s hope it will stay, but the forecast is bad weather for the weekend.

On another note when I looked to my pictures and saw the blazer I just remembered of bubble gums, because of its colour and made it this post title.
I must confess that I’ve always been a blazer woman, I have some of different colours and I suppose that it’s a piece which I can call being my style. I guess on this time of the year it’s my most wearable piece, almost as a uniform.
Don’t get me wrong, I also like a lot cardigans, but a blazer is another thing, it can makes a statement and I find it more elegant.
The blouse is also interesting it reminds me somehow a scarf print.

orange and tangerine…..

As per usual on these days today was again a rainy day, so rainy that I had to take my photos indoors. I took them in my office, but the conditions of light were no good, so I just pick this one.

I really felt comfortable in this dress, I love the print, the draped detail and the colours.

yellow and red, a statement combination....

Today I had to dress myself in a rush with no time to think much about the look.
It turned a simple outfit with some lack of accessories but yet the colours helped to make it vibrant.

I have been in such a bad mood…. I just feel like complaining, complaining, complaining… so it’s better that I stop writing or I’ll start to complain…. Lol

navy blue blazer always a classic with anything…

As you know I’m a high heels gal. Until last April I had no problems with that, because we had a free parking car outside my office’s building.

But then “they” took away from us the possibility to park there. So if I don’t want to pay to park all day (and having a huge parking bill at the end of the month) I have to leave my car in a park that makes me walk about 15 minutes to my work.

Hmmm… and the Portuguese cobblestone, despite all its beauty, is not the more appropriated road surface to walk with high heels... so that’s my drama with shoes lately…

printed wide (almost pallazo) pants......

If these pants could talk I bet they had a lot to tell….. lol

These pants were handmade by my Mom many years ago and I’ve kept them as a souvenir.
With this year's trend of printed skinny or wide pants I remembered them and I think they ended doing its job and I felt interesting dressed.

The print is tiny pink flowers with a red eye and some green leaves and the fabric is some kind of satin. I tried to make a detail of it but it didn’t work well.

So are you ready to embrace this trend?
